Global Forest Change

This research theme reveals continental and global forest transformations as the ebb and flow of deforestation, reforestation, conservation, and plantation establishment over space and time in concert with regional socio-economic dynamics.

Previous Research
  • Common temporal patterns of forest gain and loss coincident with socio-economic traits amongst nations

  • Trends in remnant natural intact vegetation cover within the global biodiversity hotspots (watch lecture)

  • Synthesis of global trends in forest loss, gain, production, management and conservation as per ~180 national reports to the 2015 Forest Resources Assessment of the U.N Food and Agricultural Organization

Current & Future Research
  • Temporal profiles of long-term forest recovery in MesoAmerica

  • Reforestation 'spatial contagion' (patterns of expansion) pan-tropically relative to deforestation
